I was a little disappointed in this book. The romance between Peter and Tobias was sweet, but the conflict with Zev felt, ultimately, anticlimactic. The author changed the rules in this universe a bit with this book by making it an alpha attribute to be able to communicate mentally with the pack.Overall, this was an okay book, but I wouldn't have found it as engaging without the larger story of the series supporting it.

This third installment in the Yellowstone Wolves series does not only live up to its predecessors, it makes me wonder what else Dirk has up his sleeves. Tobias is powerful, resourceful, determined, and… an idiot when it comes to his human. Pete is so sweet and just wants to do what’s right for everyone, but he’s been hurt before so trust of the heart doesn’t come easy. Then you add in Zev and well, things just don’t go well. Oh, and the taint of Anton just won’t leave these poor wolves alone, or will it?
When Tobias finds Pete, he finds more than just a lost human, he finds his destined mate. But, what’s he to do with him? The wolves are so reclusive that they never tell humans what they are. Ever. It’s too dangerous. Right? But the Goddess wouldn’t give him a mate he couldn’t have, would she? If you’ve read the first two books (and if not, why not?!) you know she wouldn’t do that. So really it’s a matter of Tobias believing he can’t have Pete, nothing more. But there’s also Zev, Tobias’s half-brother who not only wants Pete, but seems to be bent on some kind of dark path. When Pete returns to his home in the city, danger follows. It’s up to Tobias to overcome his fears and protect his mate. Oh, and let him know he even in a mate. So no big right? LOL
If you love shifter stories where the men are hot, the story is solid, the passion is off the chart, and the HEA is both earned and deserved, then this is a must read. I have loved this series from the beginning and can’t wait to read more. (Hint hint… what’s next Dirk?)

Pete finds himself stranded in the wilderness in a thunderstorm. He's cold and being stalked by a cougar so he holes up in a shed for the night. Little does he know that he found his way to that particular shed with a little... divine assistance and his mundane life will never be the same.
Tobias knows that Pete is his mate as soon as he sees him but there is a one teensy problem... Pete is human. Trusting Pete with not only his secret, but the safety of his pack is one thing. Telling Pete they are mates and what that implies, making Pete stay with him, that is one thing that Tobias won't do, even if it's the hardest decision he's ever had to make.
Issues like sharing the fact that you're a wolf shifter and not wanting to claim your mate for fear of taking his life choices away from him are the least of Tobias's worries though. His half brother Zev, a homicidal, psychotic wolf shifter that thinks he's entitled wants to take what's Tobias's and that includes his pack and his mate.
I really do enjoy a well written Shifter story where the history and characters are intricately woven into the storyline. Everything is tied together with the characters from the previous books, they all have a part to play. Darkness Rising was action packed and even had a few surprises. The passion between Tobias and Pete was a bit quirky but it worked for them. Pete is this sort of odd, geeky guy that has had his mind literally blown learning that shifters really do exist. And poor Tobias finally finds his mate and is willing to sacrifice his own happiness so that Pete can live his own life.
If you enjoy Shifters, Paranormal romance and great stories that flow seemlessly from start to finish, you'll like this one.
Pete is a New York “city slicker” whose friend booked both of them on a tour of Yellowstone Park. When his friend becomes ill and can’t go, Pete goes by himself, not realizing that it is a hiking tour, something Pete is completely out of his element attempting. When he becomes separated from his fellow hikers and tour guide (a jerk) Pete becomes disoriented during a rainstorm and takes shelter in a small barn. He doesn’t know it is owned by a small wolf shifter pack. In fact he has no idea shifters even exist.
Tobias is the alpha of his small Yellowstone wolf shifter pack. When he finds Pete in his barn after a storm he is stunned to realize Pete is his destined mate. While Tobias tries to hide the existence of wolf shifters from Pete, problems develop when an old enemy shows up and decides to take Pete away from Tobias. This fight continues throughout the book, which gives the story a lot of anxiety and angst.
Despite the advice of his mother and others in the pack, Tobias refuses to reveal to Pete that they are true mates. This becomes more difficult after Tobias has to shift in front of Pete, revealing what he really is, and after Tobias and Pete make love. Tobias and Pete are in love, although both refuse to admit it since Pete is on vacation and will have to return to New York in a few days.
I loved the way Pete goes from being pretty helpless in the outdoors to learning to fend for himself. Nevertheless he has to return to New York, where he has a job, a life, and friends. The dramatic ending of the book is thrilling and the perfect conclusion.
Dirk Greyson writes wonderful shifter stories, as well as mysteries and thrillers. This is the third book in a trilogy but easily read as a stand-alone novel. Nevertheless, if you haven’t read Challenge the Darkness or Darkness Threatening, I highly recommend reading all three books.
The characters practically jump off the page and the pack's story continues with each book. I'm waiting for Roger to come for a visit...Ryan needs him...
