Armed with the Sword of Destiny, the only weapon powerful enough to destroy the overlord, Ralic seeks out a dark castle tucked away in the furthest recesses of a forbidden forest to save the town from the tyrant's oppressive grip.
Weird... the overlord looks quite a lot like... Ralic.
A battle of brawn and wits ensues, reality descending into chaos and madness for Ralic, his wife, and the people of the island. Ralic’s relationships and life are put to risk as it’s up to his newly-wed wife to discover the Overlords’ secret and save her love. Nothing is as it appears, and as years of treachery are set ablaze, the villagers come to see that there’s much less they can hold onto for support in the face of such an incredible threat. Soon, the people learn the value of holding fast to that which is true, honest, and sacred, something too humble to be praised, but too powerful to be ignored.

Paper A Short Story Breath Book 1 eBook Kell Inkston Reviews
A very good short one, I got it for free in .
There are some good ideas here, a good writing hand, and nicely executed.
The ending could be a little different though, got somewhat childish, but it's still worth it.
I suppose I would recommend it for anyone with 15 minutes of free time.
Superbly written short short, encompassing all aspects of timeless lore. Clean, creative, thought provoking prose. A pleasure to read. Kell Inkston is at the top of my list of exceptional authors. Will definitely look for other works by Inkston.
I found an interest in seeing a digital book called Paper, so I went ahead and read the short story (20 pages). Even though it is short, there is but scant build-up to an anticlimactic conclusion. The premise itself - enjoyable - but the dialogue, which is utterly obtuse in the environment of Medieval Hero vs. Dark Overlord, is comical, but mildly understandable, given the quick need to see through the facade of the doppelgangers.
Aside from the dialogue, I enjoyed Inkston's style. I'd be down to read additional work; perhaps something broader in story and character development.
A small town has a family of heroes. Every generation, the newest hero defeats the evil overlord for another twenty years. But what if everything wasn't what it seemed to be?
This is a short fantasy story about a hero fighting an evil warlock. But it isn't your typical hack and slash story. There is a nice twist that changes the whole story.
The writing was good but there were a few rough spots in it. Nothing major, just some awkwardly phrased sentences mainly. Still, it was a free story which is always a good way to try a new author's writing. I would rate this one 3.5 stars.
I'm reading more and more short stories lately, so gave this a read. To me the storyline did not develop enough, nor did I find the lead characters relatable. A must for short stories. One mistake on page one when the author said dawns instead of dons when referring to putting on clothing, made me fear it might be full of errors, however it was not. I stumbled across only two more. Still, in a short story of so few words it is key to make sure all words are correct. In a 200,000 word novel, readers will overlook typos, but not so much in short stories. I think the author has talent and I hope she continues honing her craft.
"Paper" may seem like an odd name for a fantasy story about warriors and wizards, but by the time you get to the end of the story, it all makes perfect sense. Of course, I can't tell you how it makes sense, that would be mean. I'd be like one of those insensitive people who post "RIP Beth" on Walking Dead message boards before the show has even aired in other time zones. Yeah, THOSE jerks.
I really enjoyed reading this story. There are enough clever twists to fill up a full length novel, not just a short story. The characters are fun and fully realized. It's a great little story and I felt happy after reading it. I liked the theme and the symbolism at the end regarding knowledge and literacy. I had two minor issues. One is technical. The formatting seems to have gone askew. There are sentences not separated by a space and at times the first three words of a sentence will be run together. The other is that I felt too much was revealed in dialogue and not through narration. The speech by the protagonist's father went on for too long because he went over the history of the ceremony. I am sure that everyone in the town was aware why they did what they did, even the children, because the major cultural significance of the event would have been passed on via word of mouth.
Please don't let that detract you from purchasing this story. It is great! It would make perfect bedtime story for your children or grandchildren. It's well worth reading. I will be checking out more by Kell Inkston, that is for sure.
I wanted to grab a quick read, something to finish within an hour. Paper’s description seemed interesting, so I decided to have a go. Its an enjoyable read, that I found was comical at times. Paper delivered, but pretty certain I will forget it. Its original with its story, but needed more shine on its characters. There was lack of description, leaving me unable to visualize the main characters. Nothing too memorable happens between them. Conversations were alright, though I dreaded Ralic and Tenay’s cheesiness. Its alright to be lovey-dovey, but come on! Haha, we don’t need to hear so many cutesy name callings. I have unanswered questions about side characters that I found were more interesting than the main. Overall, its a book worth putting time into reading. It gives a feeling of watching an episode in a series that you like, but once its over, you move on feeling satisfied with how the story developed and played. Its a tale best read at night.
