The 40s and 50s were extraordinary years for immigrants arriving from Italy. Our narrator describes the land of opportunity in spirited, and often courageous terms,
never retreating from facts, yet always keeping a twinkling eye out for what makes us fundamentally and absurdly human.

Behind Bars More Than Just A Memoir eBook Danny Russo Reviews
Great book.. one of my favorites. Genuine and fun to read.
Now THIS is good reading!!! No one could make this stuff up, lol. Enjoyed every page.
Such a great history! Fun to read. Written as if Danny were telling you this story over a cup of espresso.
to all who love stories about the Italian immigration through NYC in the 30s and 40s, real mafia stories, the popular restaurants and bars of the past 50 years in the metro area and the celebrities that frequented them, all told by my old neighbor and good friend Danny Russo...feel very proud of being mentioned as one of his golf buddies in the book. It's a great read, very entertaining!
I just finished reading this book by Danny Russo. Although I am ten years younger than this author...I grew up in the South Bronx in the 1950's and can relate to so many of the stories he writes about in his book.
An excellent read. Even if you did not grow up in the five boroughs of NYC, you will absolutely revel in this authors tales of old New York and the Hudson Valley.
Bravo to Mr. Russo. I did not want the book to be over.
Brooklynite Son of Italy Danny Russo, veteran of famous and infamous Italian restaurants in lower Westchester, has written an autobiography. The pages are full of real-life tales of a Rennaissance man, child hustler, Catholic school boy, coming of age in the 50s and 60s, migrating north to Hudson River cities, settling in Verplank and Peekskill. He has worked a variety of jobs and developed about 1,000 friendships with interesting characters that make good reading. His language is an honest vernacular, reads like listening to a buddy, while bellied up to the bar. His cast of includes mafioso, la familia, friends on the block, lady lovers, quirky business and restaurant owners and patrons, and a slew of interesting pals.
